If you are applying to study overseas you need to understand what the different IELTS bands mean. What’s the difference between band 5.0 and 7.0 in IELTS?
Band 5 refers to someone whose English is quite basic but OK. There will be mistakes but generally the meaning is clear. In writing this may mean that the reader sometimes gets a little confused but usually knows what the writer is trying to say. Similarly, in speaking there might be moments the listener doesn’t understand, maybe due to a language mistake or pronunciation error, but can usually follow the message. The difference between Band 5 and Band 6 is that in Band 6, the mistakes you make do not cause misunderstanding. Perhaps you use the wrong word form or the wrong tense but your meaning is still clear. Obviously if you have lots of little mistakes that will damage your score but in Band 6 mistakes are ok as long as they don’t cause too much trouble. Band 7 is where a lot of those basic mistakes have been fixed. Your language is more accurate but there are still mistakes. However, these mistakes tend to occur when you are attempting to use more sophisticated or complex language. Band 5 - Quite a high frequency of mistakes with mistakes in some basic areas. The reader/listener may not always understand your meaning clearly. Band 6 - Still quite a few mistakes, including some mistakes in some basic areas. The reader/listener always knows what you mean, although sometimes they may have to think a little. Band 7 - There are fewer mistakes and mistakes that do occur happen in more sophisticated areas. The reader/listener is always clear about what you are trying to say.
